Top 5 Comics (May 30, 2012)

My top comics for this week are:

5. Wolverine and the X-Men #11 (Marvel): This is a Avengers Verses X-Men tie-in issue where we continue the story from Cyclopes and his X-Men show up at the Jean Grey School. What members of the school faculty and students will join up with Cyclopes to fight the Avengers. What will happen in the fight between Iceman and the Red Hulk? This title has been one of the more fun and well written X-Men titles these days and that's all thanks to Jason Aaron.

4. Animal Man Annual #1 (DC Comics): The return of the first DC Annuals. This issue should be a good jumping on point for those interested in seeing what will come next with the Rot World storyline from Animal Man and Swamp Thing. This appears to be the first crossing point of the stories of Animal Man (Jeff Lemire) and Swamp Thing (Scott Snyder). Both titles have been telling a similar stories, but from two different view points ( Animal Man with the Red and Swamp Thing with the Green) on taking down the Rot.

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #10 (IDW): This has been an amazing series that seems to be able to blend the concepts from the original comic and the 80's/90's cartoon to an amazing story point. In this issue we get SHREDDER.

2. FF #18 (Marvel): This issue Johnathan Hickman takes the Future Foundation to Wakanda, and we get a new member brought in. This is the first issue of a new story that brings the FF and the Fantastic Four to Wakanda, which should be interesting.

1. Batman Annual #1 (DC Comics): Court of the Owls continues and Mr. Freeze is introduced. What relation does Mr. Freeze have to the Court of Owls, and will he be key to taking down the Talon?

Top 5 Comics (May 23, 2012)

My top comics for this week are:

5. All-Star Western #9 (DC Comics): This has been solidly one of the best titles of the relaunch, and continues to be one of my favourite reads month to month. Taking place with Jonah Hex taking on the Court of the Owls that have been the main bad guys from the Batman book, we see what it was like in 1880 Gotham City when the Owls attacked. This continues the crossover that has been going on in almost all of the Batman/Gotham related books. Its bound to be a good read, with it being written by the great team of Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti (who after meeting Jimmy at Calgary Expo last year sold me on the title).

4. Justice League Dark #9 (DC Comics): This issue is the start of a new run on the title with writer Jeff Lemire on the book. Jeff Lemire has been doing astounding work on the titles of; Sweet Tooth, Animal Man, and Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E. to name a few, and I look forward to see what he brings to the Justice League Dark title. As from the titles previously mentioned we know that he can really bring the dark into he well crafted stories.

3. Dark Horse Presents #12 (Dark Horse): A great anthology title collecting short or multi-part comic stories in one title. The primary reason I'm looking forward to this issue is for the continuation of the Black Beetle story from one of my favourite artists Francesco Francavilla, who is also the writer of the story. As well in this issue there looks to be a interesting Aliens story in there by John Layman for all of you excited fro the movie Prometheus or are just fans of the Aliens franchise.

2. Fantastic Four #606 (Marvel): What can I say, I'm a sucker for a Johnathan Hickman title, and Fantastic Four has consistently been a top rate title. I spent some time last week about how much I enjoy Hickman's work so I wont go over that again, but do yourself a favor and start reading this title if you haven't been.

1. Batman, Incorporated #1 (DC Comics): The return of Grant Morrison to Batman comics has finally arrived. This twelve issue series is the conclusion of Mr. Morrison's breath taking monumental run with the character of Batman. A story over six years in the make. A story the saw Batman have a son, Batman die, Batman return from the dead, and now take on what could possibly be his greatest challenge yet. You can find a great article on Geeks of Doom as to why you should be reading this book by Hunter Camp, I highly recommend you read it as well.

Top 5 Comics (May 16, 2012)

My top comics for this week are:

5. Fantastic Four #605.1(Marvel) : This issue, written by Jonathan Hickman, is about the "Secret History" of the Fantastic Four. This should be a great jump on point for those people interested in reading Fantastic Four without going back to the beginning of Hickman's run, that is if this point one issue does what it's supposed to.

4. DC Universe Presents #9 (DC Comics) : DC Comics anthology title continues with the start of a new three issue story staring the immortal caveman warlord Vandal Savage. In this James Robinson continues to tell the stories of classic Earth-2 characters in the new post Flashpoint DC Universe, work that he has been doing with The Shade (also out this week) and Earth 2 (that came out earlier this month).

3. Daredevil #13 (Marvel) : This is just one of those must read titles. Mark Waid has been writing a phanominal series since its launch last year, and the art is always top notch. Read this to find out what happens when Megacrime strikes back at Daredevil for whats been going this series.

2. The Manhattan Project #3(Image) : This is just another great title by Jonathan Hickman. I can't do this series justice trying to describe it, so instead I will just leave with the solicitation for it:
"The Death of FDR leaves the Manhattan Projects in chaos as questions of leadership arise. The world’s first Artificial Intelligence is created 40 years ahead of schedule. And whatever happened to the THIRD atomic bomb developed by Oppenheimer and his unparalleled Science Team?"

1. Batwoman #9 (DC Comics) : This is the only Batfamily title out this month that isn't crossing over into the events of the main Batman book, instead it continues along with the great story so far being told by J.H. Williams, III & W. Haden Blackman. This has been a great title so far, with it building on the Greg Rucka run from Detective Comics a few years back. It is great to see a strong female & strong LGBT character leading this great series. For information on more LGBT characters in comics check out this article by Alan Kistler over at Newsarama

What's Going On

Sorry for the absence lately, I was going through some crazy stuff with my ex and possibly losing my job. Anyways that's all over now, and now I can return to trying to make this a weekdaily blog again. I hope to do a couple extra posts through the week to make up for being so lackluster last week.

Will Ferrel Friday (Week 1)

I know its May the Fourth as well as the day that The Avengers comes out so I should probably be talking about something to do with either of those, but instead I'm returning to one of my favorite things I used to do on Facebook. Today is the return of Will Ferrel Fridays. I find there's nothing like a Will Ferrel clip to get you through that last day of the work week. So we are starting it with a clip from my all time favorite Will Ferrel movie 'Anchorman'.

Anyways here are some pics of geek girls that I find amazing. (I realize that some of these could just be models that are dressed as geeks for the photo, but I don't care.)

A New Frontier of Comics

Pretty much five years ago today I attended my first comic convention, it was the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo which I just attended for the fifth year in a row (but more on that another time). Well at this con I was looking at some trades/graphic novels, this was before I really got into comic books (not like how I am today), and well I was looking I found the two paperbacks of DC: The New Frontier. Something about it just called to me, probably was something to do with the art and that classic Silver Age look.  I bought those two paperbacks and I just fell in love with it. I was still so new to comics, and most if not all my comic book knowledge came from the cartoons, so I had no idea who characters like; The Losers, Slam Bradley, The Challengers of the Unknown, or anyone else that didn’t show up in the Justice League/Justice League Unlimited cartoons. I now pretty much end up doing a reread of this story every year, each time I pick up more and more of the depths of the Silver Age history Darwyn Cooke has put into this story. I love this story, to the point that if I come across an edition of it that I need to buy it right away. Last year I purchased the Absolute Edition of it, and the art in in just lends itself to the to that format so well that it is almost too distracting and beautiful to read. I really think that this story and its art has cemented in for me a love of the more classic & simplistic art style that also we see in some of the animation styles of a not so long gone time. Of course that being said Darwyn Cooke couldn’t get work in the comic book industry for a long time because of that very reason, and so he went into cartooning. As I was saying earlier that I do purchase all editions of this story that I don’t already own, and just this weekend I finally was able to get my hands on the single issues of it. I’m so proud of owning them, I’m proud of having every edition I have. And as I’m writing this I’m watching the DVD. I also strongly think this is the story that made me become a diehard Justice League fan, not just the cartoon or comic book, but the concept of the Justice League and the DC pantheon that it is made of. Below are the images of my collection of DC: The New Frontier.
(My first copies of DC: The New Frontier)
 (The beautiful Absolute Edition)
(The wonderfully produced, animated, & voice acted DVD)
(The single issues that I picked up just this past weekend at Calgary Expo)
