Top 5 Comics (01-16-13)

Lets start this introduction to this weeks comics with something epic, so I give you 'Flash'

So yeah now that we have the epic theme of Flash Gordon in our minds lets get to some comics (the theme has nothing to do with anything I'm talking about this we, but I couldn't think of any rambling to start of this week).

5. Avenger Assemble #11 (Marvel): Just continuing the story already presented by Kelly Sue DeConnick since she has taken over the title. It's just one of those fun and personable titles that I'm really enjoying. Between this and Captain Marvel (also out today) Kelly Sue DeConnick is becoming one of my favourite writers in comics working today.

4. Saga #9 (Image): The Will finally has a good day. What does that mean for this series? Month to month this is a comic I look forward to getting my hands on every month, the art and writing is a master class in comics.

3.Threshold #1 (DC Comics): Cosmic DC mini stories written by Kieth Giffen, including a story about Larfleeze. I'm down for trying this out.

2. The Black Beetle: No Way Out #1 (Dark Horse): Story and art by the great Francesco Francavilla. Continuing from his great work in Dark Horse Presents. The amazing art should be enough to get you to buy it, but the story just adds more bang for your buck. Classic pulp stories are back thanks to Mr. Francavilla.

1. New Avengers #2 (Marvel): "The Illuminati gather to plan for the death of Everything." That alone should be something dragging you to buy it, tied in with the beautiful Jock cover, Steve Epting art, and Johnathan Hickman's amazing storytelling.

Breaking Bad Appreciation

One of my favorite artists, Francesco Francavilla, recently started watching Breaking Bad, and because he has gotten into it the show so much that he has started doing minimalist posters for every episode and posting them up over at his blog. Below are the posters for season one:

Top 5 Comics (May 23, 2012)

My top comics for this week are:

5. All-Star Western #9 (DC Comics): This has been solidly one of the best titles of the relaunch, and continues to be one of my favourite reads month to month. Taking place with Jonah Hex taking on the Court of the Owls that have been the main bad guys from the Batman book, we see what it was like in 1880 Gotham City when the Owls attacked. This continues the crossover that has been going on in almost all of the Batman/Gotham related books. Its bound to be a good read, with it being written by the great team of Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti (who after meeting Jimmy at Calgary Expo last year sold me on the title).

4. Justice League Dark #9 (DC Comics): This issue is the start of a new run on the title with writer Jeff Lemire on the book. Jeff Lemire has been doing astounding work on the titles of; Sweet Tooth, Animal Man, and Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E. to name a few, and I look forward to see what he brings to the Justice League Dark title. As from the titles previously mentioned we know that he can really bring the dark into he well crafted stories.

3. Dark Horse Presents #12 (Dark Horse): A great anthology title collecting short or multi-part comic stories in one title. The primary reason I'm looking forward to this issue is for the continuation of the Black Beetle story from one of my favourite artists Francesco Francavilla, who is also the writer of the story. As well in this issue there looks to be a interesting Aliens story in there by John Layman for all of you excited fro the movie Prometheus or are just fans of the Aliens franchise.

2. Fantastic Four #606 (Marvel): What can I say, I'm a sucker for a Johnathan Hickman title, and Fantastic Four has consistently been a top rate title. I spent some time last week about how much I enjoy Hickman's work so I wont go over that again, but do yourself a favor and start reading this title if you haven't been.

1. Batman, Incorporated #1 (DC Comics): The return of Grant Morrison to Batman comics has finally arrived. This twelve issue series is the conclusion of Mr. Morrison's breath taking monumental run with the character of Batman. A story over six years in the make. A story the saw Batman have a son, Batman die, Batman return from the dead, and now take on what could possibly be his greatest challenge yet. You can find a great article on Geeks of Doom as to why you should be reading this book by Hunter Camp, I highly recommend you read it as well.
