Top 5 Comics (04-24-13)

It's a  birthday edition of Top 5 Comics. No, none of the comics birthdays... well I guess one of them, since it's their first issue today, but I'm not talking about that. It's my birthday, so tomorrow we will have a birthday geek gift recap post before I head up to Calgary for Calgary Expo this year. Anyways enough with this pre-talk lets get to some comics.

5. Jupiter's Legacy #1 (Image comics): I actually don't know much about this title beside its creative team, but that alone is some that has sold on this, Mark Millar and Frank Quitely. For those of us who are long time comic fan, or even short time comic fans those are going to be two names we know. For me it was Quitely on Earth 2, and Millar on Superman: Red Son. Those were two of the first trades I ever picked up, and how many others have started with books like All Star Superman or Kick Ass? So let's hope that this title can live up to the legacy of its creative team, because I know right now I have high hopes for this book.

4. New Avengers #5 (Marvel Comics): This issue is supposed to focus on the character Black Swan, you may remember she's the other dimensional being that came through & kind started this story rolling. So getting some back story for this character would be pretty interesting. I'm just down for pretty much whatever Hickman will through at us too.

3. Batman Incorporated #10 (DC Comics): This series is just one of my favourite series in comics right now, and that we are getting to see the return of a post New 52 character that has been missing. As well with the gatefold cover reveled of Man or Bat who will survive? What does this all mean for the captured Jason Todd?

2. Avengers #10 (Marvel Comics): The Avengers come to Canada. This is a big deal to me, some of my long time followers over on twitter may know that I am advocate for international characters/stories/events/other things in comics as I am also an international reader. I have been quite critical of DC for it's constant xenocentrism towards the United States of America, and it seems that their answer as of late has been to add England into the mix of countries they can go. That's great for them, I look over at Marvel and see what Johnathan Hickman is doing with Avengers & can't help but be happy to see an global team taking on global issues. You have a real world feel, you have them going to real places, and this time they happen to be coming to my neck of the woods. I'm excited for this. It will be good to see Omega Flight in action, maybe the Avengers will recruit a member. who knows.

1. Young Avengers #4 (Marvel Comics): Hawkeye (Kate Bishop) and Marvel Boy return to Earth. This was my most anticipated Marvel NOW title, and now only four issues in I have to say I am not disappointed. Kieron Gillen has just knocked it out of the park, and is able to fully capture what it would seem to be like to be a teen super hero in this world. This is a must read title if you haven't been so far.

Top 5 Comics (02-06-12)

Its the return of my top 5 weekly comics pull list. It's a new month with a new attempted at regularly posting here. So lets get to the comics.

5. Swamp Thing/Animal Man #17 (DC Comics): This is a double placing, for today is the finale of the epic Rot World story that was building since the New 52 reboot. I have them together here because since the start of the Rot World story arc we've seen these two title intertwining, and it is only fitting to have them close out together.

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #18 (IDW): The Turtles find themselves in Dimension X. After following the Teenagers from Dimension X last issue to the home dimension of Krang! What does this war torn dimension have in store for our Turtles?

3. Iron Man #6 (Marvel Comics): Iron Man in space! This is the start of the AVX aftermath story THE GODKILLER. Could Tony be facing galactic repercussions for his actions in AVX?

2. New Avengers #3 (Marvel Comics): Johnathan Hickman and his Illuminati story. This is by far one of my favourite titles out of Marvel NOW. With a new member joining their ranks, could this be Beast in his new form as a representative of Mutant kind? (More than likely)

1. Avengers #5 (Marvel Comics): Another character development issue introducing us to some of the lesser known characters on the team. The last issue was great with it's Hyperion focus. I can't wait to see how these pay off in the long run of what Johnathan Hickman has planned for the title.

Top 5 Comics (01-16-13)

Lets start this introduction to this weeks comics with something epic, so I give you 'Flash'

So yeah now that we have the epic theme of Flash Gordon in our minds lets get to some comics (the theme has nothing to do with anything I'm talking about this we, but I couldn't think of any rambling to start of this week).

5. Avenger Assemble #11 (Marvel): Just continuing the story already presented by Kelly Sue DeConnick since she has taken over the title. It's just one of those fun and personable titles that I'm really enjoying. Between this and Captain Marvel (also out today) Kelly Sue DeConnick is becoming one of my favourite writers in comics working today.

4. Saga #9 (Image): The Will finally has a good day. What does that mean for this series? Month to month this is a comic I look forward to getting my hands on every month, the art and writing is a master class in comics.

3.Threshold #1 (DC Comics): Cosmic DC mini stories written by Kieth Giffen, including a story about Larfleeze. I'm down for trying this out.

2. The Black Beetle: No Way Out #1 (Dark Horse): Story and art by the great Francesco Francavilla. Continuing from his great work in Dark Horse Presents. The amazing art should be enough to get you to buy it, but the story just adds more bang for your buck. Classic pulp stories are back thanks to Mr. Francavilla.

1. New Avengers #2 (Marvel): "The Illuminati gather to plan for the death of Everything." That alone should be something dragging you to buy it, tied in with the beautiful Jock cover, Steve Epting art, and Johnathan Hickman's amazing storytelling.

Top 5 Comics (01-02-13)

It's a new year with some new comics. So lets stop with this chatter and head on to the comics list.

5. Adventure Time: Fiona & Cake #1 (kaboom): This is the first time I've had a Kaboom title on the list, but this one has the potential to be great. I've started recently reading the regular Adventure Time title, and it has been great. I'm looking forward to this gender swap mini series.

4. Iron Man #5 (Marvel):  This has been one of my favourite series to come out of the Marvel NOW relaunch. This is building up to the conclusion of the Extremis story that has been building the bones for future stories, and I'm looking forward to the way this will lead into Tony Stark (Iron Man) being in the Guardians of the Galaxy.

3. The Manhattan Project #8 (Image): If you're not new to the blog you know I have a soft spot of this series, and the writer of it. I look forward to every issue of this title as it comes out. I'm just going to say this again READ THIS BOOK!

2. Batman Incorporated #6 (DC Comics): Like I really have to talk about this series. Come one it's the build up to Grant Morrison's cross title spanning series. I can't wait to see how this story plays out, and with the amazing art it's a title that can't be beat.

1. New Avengers #1 (Marvel): Johnathan Hickman taking on the Marvel universes Illuminati and them taking on the macro problems that face Earth. As well it is Hickman taking on characters I absolutely love, and other that I've fallen for while reading his other works. Lastly Black Panther is one of the freaking stars of this series, and it appears to have heavy focus on him.
