Top 5 Comics (01-02-13)

It's a new year with some new comics. So lets stop with this chatter and head on to the comics list.

5. Adventure Time: Fiona & Cake #1 (kaboom): This is the first time I've had a Kaboom title on the list, but this one has the potential to be great. I've started recently reading the regular Adventure Time title, and it has been great. I'm looking forward to this gender swap mini series.

4. Iron Man #5 (Marvel):  This has been one of my favourite series to come out of the Marvel NOW relaunch. This is building up to the conclusion of the Extremis story that has been building the bones for future stories, and I'm looking forward to the way this will lead into Tony Stark (Iron Man) being in the Guardians of the Galaxy.

3. The Manhattan Project #8 (Image): If you're not new to the blog you know I have a soft spot of this series, and the writer of it. I look forward to every issue of this title as it comes out. I'm just going to say this again READ THIS BOOK!

2. Batman Incorporated #6 (DC Comics): Like I really have to talk about this series. Come one it's the build up to Grant Morrison's cross title spanning series. I can't wait to see how this story plays out, and with the amazing art it's a title that can't be beat.

1. New Avengers #1 (Marvel): Johnathan Hickman taking on the Marvel universes Illuminati and them taking on the macro problems that face Earth. As well it is Hickman taking on characters I absolutely love, and other that I've fallen for while reading his other works. Lastly Black Panther is one of the freaking stars of this series, and it appears to have heavy focus on him.

2012 Recap: Top 5 Titles of 2012

So the year is coming to an end and it time to look back over the year and see what new released titles of 2012 I really enjoyed. So lets start this off with...

5. Batman, Incorporated (DC Comics): Now this is kind of a cheat, and we wont see it on many best of lists for the year because it is the second volume of Grant Morrison's Batman, Incorporated work. I know I have said this time and time again, but I'm a big fan of Mr. Morrison's work (especially with Batman), and if I was doing a top 10 list we would see his dive into creator owned with with Image's Happy. This Batman title is continuing with a lot of what he did back in the pre-New 52 relaunch. The inclusion Chris Burnham art has just made the title ten times better. It's great and I can't wait to see this collected with the first volume of it.

4. Thor God of Thunder (Marvel): This isn't a title I've talked a lot about on here, but it is one of the most amazing and well plotted titles of Marvel NOW. The idea of watching Thor from three points in time (youth, present, and all father Thor) just strikes a cord with me. How will the events with the Butcher lead to Thor being the last in Asgard? Jason Aaron over the last 2 years has become one of my favourite comic book writers, and here he is bound to deliver an amazing story.

3. The Manhattan Project (Image): 2012 was the year of Image. They just knocked it out of the park with their twentieth anniversary of the creator owned publisher and some of the most amazing titles to come out in years. One of the titles being The Manhattan Project by Jonathan Hickman, an alternate history of the Cold War arms race is giving us an amazing story with aliens, cyborgs, alternate earths, and so much more. This is a must read title.

2. Avengers (Marvel): So far we have only seen two issues of this title, but both of them were just amazing. I am more placing this title here for the potential it has with Johnathan Hickman helming the title, and after seeing the expansiveness that he gave us in Fantastic Four and FF as well as his work over at Image this is going to be a title to watch in 2013 as it is bound to give us some amazing story telling.

1 Saga (Image): I've already spoken on 2012 being the year of Image, and that just is made more clear by the amazing title that is Saga. I really don't know how to put in words how great the BKV space Romeo and Juliet story has been., and it is just complimented by the beautiful Fiona Staples art. I've said this so many times before, but get your eyes reading this asap. This wasn't even a title I was going to read originally, but I tried it and I was hooked.

Top 5 Comics (September 12, 2012)

What's this? Another weekly comic list? How is this happening? I just happen too have a lot of fre time in the morning, and there's only some much of it you can fill with sleeping, reading, and other things. So that means you get another top five comic list. This week we say goodbye to a couple of the comics on this list. So lets get to it, starting with...

5. X-Treme X-Men #3 (Marvel Comics): This title has been a constant surprise for me. I do enjoy Gregg Pak as a writer, from things like Incredible Hulk and Alpha Flight, so I shouldn't have been surprised but this just seemed like it was going to be a different dimension cash grab through X-Men brand name. In fact this has been quite the fun dimension hopping adventure staring the 616 Dazzler and a ragtag group of familiar X-Characters. Check it out as our heroes face off against some familiar looking foes.

4. Resurrection Man #0 (DC Comics): FINAL ISSUE! In this issue we find out the origin of Mitch Shelley. This has been an exciting title that we saw cross paths with so much of the New 52 DC Universe in its thirteen issue run. It was also interesting to see that this was one of the few new 52 titles to keep the original creative team from its first run. This has been a fun read, but its poor sales doomed it.

3. The Shade #12 (DC Comics): FINAL ISSUE! The great James Robinson mini-series of The Shade comes to an end. This title had some struggles in sales, and almost faced cancellation so to see it reach its 12 issue finale is wonderful. This has been a great read with an interesting story of The Shade getting to the roots of some family troubles. The art has always been great on this title with its open door of artist, and the flashback issue were always an enjoyable read. If you haven't been reading this pick it up when its out in a collected edition.

2. The Manhattan Project #6 (Image Comics): Go figure I'd put a Johnathan Hickman title on this list. Well we have a new issue of The Manhattan Project, and after issue five's cliffhanger I'm more then excited to see what happens next. The first trade just came out last week so if you are interested in reading with this issue but want to see what happened before (I highly recommend doing this) pick up the trade when you go into your Local Comic Shop (or online comic shop) this week.

1. Fantastic Four #610 (Marvel Comics): A second Johnathan Hickman title, this must be some kind of mistake, right? Now way. As Marvel ramps up to their Marvel NOW! reboot we are inch closer to the conclusion of Johnathan Hickman's cross series spanning opus. This issue of Fantastic Four we will see cross over with FF later this month. This is also the second last issue of Fantastic Four before Marvel NOW! so I'm excited to see where it goes, and if anything he has left from the Fantastic Four and FF will follow Johnathan Hickman over to the Avengers titles he is going to be taking over.

Top 5 Comics (June 27, 2012)

I know I haven't been posting lately, that's because of some stressful stuff going on in my life and just not feeling like writing anything. But anyways here is this weeks top 5 list of comics:

5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #11 (IDW): Honestly this is just a good fun comic blending bits from the original comic series and the cartoons that followed. In it the Turtles are trying to rescue Splinter from the Shredder. It's fun. It's exciting. It's damn fine read and you should pick this up if you have any love for the Ninja Turtles at all.

4. FF #19 (Marvel): The kids of the Future Foundation are on safari in Wakanda, and we may be getting a new member to the team. This comic almost seems like an oddity in comics these days with it being mostly about a group of kids having fun. Sure they are super intelligent kids. This issue seems like its going to be a fun one and done issue.

3. The Manhattan Project #4 (Image): Another Johnathan Hickman book for this week, and this time we get the Life and Death of Albert Einstein... or at least the life and death of Albert Einstein in The Manhattan Project. Solid read with interesting concepts. Just look at past post of mine to know I like Johnathan Hickman

2. Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who #2 (IDW): Just buy this to satisfy the raging geek boner that this crossover brings on. Borg & Cybermen working together and it's up to the Doctor and the crew from TNG to save the universe.

1. Batman, Incorporated #2 (DC Comics): I'm taking the summation of this issue from ifanboy "This is the story of a man and a woman fighting over the heart and soul of their child. Unfortunately for the world, the man is BATMAN, the woman is TALIA AL GHUL, and the child is DAMIAN."

Top 5 Comics (May 16, 2012)

My top comics for this week are:

5. Fantastic Four #605.1(Marvel) : This issue, written by Jonathan Hickman, is about the "Secret History" of the Fantastic Four. This should be a great jump on point for those people interested in reading Fantastic Four without going back to the beginning of Hickman's run, that is if this point one issue does what it's supposed to.

4. DC Universe Presents #9 (DC Comics) : DC Comics anthology title continues with the start of a new three issue story staring the immortal caveman warlord Vandal Savage. In this James Robinson continues to tell the stories of classic Earth-2 characters in the new post Flashpoint DC Universe, work that he has been doing with The Shade (also out this week) and Earth 2 (that came out earlier this month).

3. Daredevil #13 (Marvel) : This is just one of those must read titles. Mark Waid has been writing a phanominal series since its launch last year, and the art is always top notch. Read this to find out what happens when Megacrime strikes back at Daredevil for whats been going this series.

2. The Manhattan Project #3(Image) : This is just another great title by Jonathan Hickman. I can't do this series justice trying to describe it, so instead I will just leave with the solicitation for it:

"The Death of FDR leaves the Manhattan Projects in chaos as questions of leadership arise. The world’s first Artificial Intelligence is created 40 years ahead of schedule. And whatever happened to the THIRD atomic bomb developed by Oppenheimer and his unparalleled Science Team?"

1. Batwoman #9 (DC Comics) : This is the only Batfamily title out this month that isn't crossing over into the events of the main Batman book, instead it continues along with the great story so far being told by J.H. Williams, III & W. Haden Blackman. This has been a great title so far, with it building on the Greg Rucka run from Detective Comics a few years back. It is great to see a strong female & strong LGBT character leading this great series. For information on more LGBT characters in comics check out this article by Alan Kistler over at Newsarama
